3月18日 Back from 12th IPRRC Conference in MiamiI don't know why i suddenly can not type Chinese, so please forgive me to use English
This was a fantastic trip, first to NYC, and then to Miami. I was RA for my supervisor Flora in the past year, and then we submitted our first stage outcome to the reputable IPRRC, which is a annul international conference specially on PR. Therefore, I planned my second trip to US. First, I went to NYC and spent great times with andrew for a week. We went to Time Square, Fifth Avenue, Natural history museum, metropolitan museum, Wallstreet, China Town, 21st Century, central park, upper eastside, the rivier and bay, ...everywhere in Manhattan. I love New York quite a lot! That is a fantastic city full of fun, full of possibilities, full of diversities, and....very fashionable! New York actually changed my attitude to fashion in US.
On the fifth day in NYC, i got the e-mail from HKBU that I received a postgraduate scholarship. Every year three or four postgraduates are selected for this. I am not sure whether i deserve it or not. But to some extent it recognized my efforts in the past two years.
Then, I flied to Miami, a wonderful city with pleasant whether and beautiful beach. What i saw there was totally different from NYC. Miami is more low and slow pitched, more comfortabe, and more relaxed. The conference lasted four days including openning and closing social. I met with so many famous PR scholars whom i had long heard of and admired. I listened to their presentations, we talked, discussed and I really learnt quite a lot from this process.
I found that, actually what i have learnt is just the tip of the large iceberg. Different scholars from different tracks or approaches have their own interpretation to the same discipline. They varies and make the PR knowledge and body of theories broader and broader. Just as Dr. Don Stacks said to me, " you are the young generation, what you should do is to pick up the good from us, stand at a higher level and then develop and walk on. " I am quite happy that I had those nice conversations with those who i admired, such as Dr. Heath, Dr. Stacks, Dr. Freitag, Dr. Bowen, ....etc. I am also happy to know many new friends from different countires, they are young scholars and future of PR academia. I also had happy dinners with Flora, who has always been helping me, guiding me, supporting me. She gave more suggestions and I decided to improve myself accordingly.
Then I went back to NYC, and spent another two days with Andrew. He really did quite a lot for me. Here, i want to say to you, "honey, thanks!"
On my way back (actually i am still in Korean airport), i am thinking of , where i should go, which way i should take after five months. Just as Flora said, "if you want, you can do well in either area, academia or industry". But, which one i like more, i have more passion for it, which path is more suitable for me? Many scholars i met this time, they had many years industry experience and then entered academia. This is of course a possible way for me. However, career is not the only thing in my life after all. I also need to consider my future family...
There should be and must be a compromise. But I am still working on it. I am sure I will figure it out very soon. Flora, Regina, and Dr. Freitag all said to me, "you still have time." Yeah, right, i am still young. As long as I keep learning, no matter where I am, I am not wasting my life. This is a long process for accumulation.
OK, I must stop here. I need to prepare for boarding now. After I am back to HK, i have piles of things to do. Anyway, I have faith here. I am sure there will be a bright way ahead of me!
